Here's the thing about ocean plastic: by the time it's floating in the water, the damage is already spreading. Once plastic breaks down into microplastics, it becomes nearly impossible to remove - and it starts interfering with the ocean's natural ability to absorb carbon from the atmosphere.
The real opportunity to stop plastic pollution happens earlier, in the communities where waste management systems simply don't exist yet. Why Household Collection Works Better Than Cleanups
Beach and ocean cleanups matter — they protect wildlife in the moment and raise awareness. But while household collection tackles the root cause of plastic pollution, beach cleanups focus more on cleaning up land already smothered in plastic. What Actually Happens After Collection
This is where it gets interesting. Clean Hub doesn't just collect plastic — they built an entire system for what happens next, and it depends on what kind of plastic it is.
Recyclable items collected are sent to a local recycling facility, where they're processed and fed back into the circular economy. But here's the catch: roughly 80% of plastic that enters the oceans is multi-layer or flexible plastic — the kind that isn't recyclable, because there's no infrastructure yet to repurpose it.
So what happens to that non-recyclable waste? It's sent to a co-processing plant, a facility that burns plastic waste in a cement kiln at extremely high temperatures — between roughly 1,250°C and 1,450°C, allowing it to fully combust in just seconds. Unlike standard incineration, which simply burns waste down to ash, co-processing puts that energy to work — the heat and minerals generated get reused directly in cement production.
Is it a perfect solution? No — Clean Hub themselves are upfront that co-processing still generates emissions and isn't something they'd call fully "green." But it helps cement makers, an industry responsible for a significant share of global carbon emissions, reduce their reliance on raw fossil fuels — and most importantly, it keeps plastic out of landfills and waterways for good.
That last point matters more than it might seem. Landfills aren't a safe alternative — as waste decomposes, it releases methane, a greenhouse gas far more potent than CO2, and without proper protection, landfills leak waste straight into the surrounding environment. Clean Hub deliberately avoids this route.
Clean Hub is also keeping an eye on greener alternatives on the horizon, like chemical recycling and plastic-based construction materials — but for now, co-processing remains the best available option to reduce plastic pollution while avoiding landfill waste.
