Begin your plastic free journey

If you’re a fan of TORRAIN, you are probably aware of your carbon footprint. We admit, sometimes that awareness is overwhelming. It’s hard to be plastic free in this modern world. We now know that we have microplastics in our blood and oceans filling with plastic

Even going to the grocery store can be a depressing experience if you let yourself get too swept up in it. However, the best way to deal with the overwhelming feeling of hopelessness to our plastic problem is to make small changes in the way we shop! We've put together a list of different companies you can support for many everyday needs in your home!

  • The Refill it Center, Portland, OR for bulk items
    • If you are not in Portland, most grocery stores have a bulk aisle
    • Reusable water bottle and coffee cups
    • Reusable utensils and stainless steel straw on you when out in the world
      • I keep a spork and chopsticks in my car for eating on the go
    • Shop at local farmers markets
    • Return the little green berry basket back to the farmers stand the next week
      • Ask if they accept them at the grocery store if you don't have one near you
    • Bring your own container for meat and prepared foods
    • Buy in bulk when possible
    • Choose plastic free chewing gum!
      • Did you know it's basically made from plastic? Here is a healthy, plastic free alternative!
      • If the label lists “gum base” as an ingredient, it may contain “petroleum, lanolin, glycerin, polyethylene, polyvinyl acetate, petroleum wax, stearic acid, or latex,” according to the Vegetarian Resource Group
    • Make baking soda your best friend! There are so many uses for it!
    • Cut out sodas, juices and beverages  that come in plastic bottles
      • When you are out running errands, and you feel parched, try to grab either a glass or aluminum bottle! Both those options are easier to recycle than plastic. The best option, however, is bring your own! ;)
