A girlfriend recently asked me what I do to stay in shape. I thought about it for a second, what do I do to stay in shape? I guess the question took me by surprise because I don’t feel like I go out of my way to “do” exercise; it’s just a part of my daily life. If I am unable to move my body for more than a couple days, I start to feel anxious, slower and heavier. I stay active to feel good.
Yoga, climbing and aerial arts are big aspects of my life. These activities are great for toning. I love climbing and aerial because of the way they challenge me, mentally and physically. Also, hanging out at the rock gym is a great place to spend time with people.
For cardio and great bone health, I try to run 2-3 times per week. One way that I make running sustainable is I don’t run too long or try to push myself. This sounds strange as of course it’s important to challenge yourself. But the challenge for me is to maintain the practice of running and the way I’m able to do that is to run a couple miles a couple times a week.
The outdoors provides a world of adventure right at our disposal and I try to engage in it as much as possible by hiking, biking, surfing and snowboarding. These are all fun and beautiful sports to me and make me feel connected to nature while harnessing it and staying humble.
Another important aspect of a healthy mind and body is what we use to fuel ourselves. Food is so important and I happen to be a huge fan of delicious food! Every morning, I make a bulletproof drink of yerba mate, cashews, cinnamon and coconut oil. I love it. The cashews make it creamy and delicious, the fat in the coconut oil prevents the crash from the caffeine and promotes cognitive function and energy. Yerba mate is my favorite alternative to coffee. Lunch is usually at the office – I love salad with salmon or chicken and grains. I can’t deny that I love going out to dinner. It’s one of my favorite things to do, especially in Portland since we have an endless grip of incredible restaurants.
When it comes to food, I eat everything but not too much of anything and I pay attention to where the food is from and what the ingredients are. I love cheeses, good meats, fish and pasta but I don’t over indulge. Everything in moderation.
